What is Abilify?

Abilify (aripiprazole is an antipsychotic medication)

Abilify is used to treat the signs of psychotic conditions such as bipolar disorder (manic depression).

Abilify is also used together with other medicines to treat major depressive disorder in adults.

Important information

Abilify is not recommended for use in psychotic conditions related to dementia. Abilify may develop the risk of death in older adults with dementia-related conditions.

Some young people have thoughts about suicide when using medicine for a major depressive disorder and other psychiatric disorders. Your doctor will want to check your progress at regular visits while you are taking Abilify. Your family or other caregivers should also be careful to changes in your mood or symptoms.

Before taking this medicine

You should not use Abilify if you are allergic to aripiprazole. Abilify is not recommended for use in psychotic conditions related to dementia. It may increase the risk of death in older adults with dementia-related conditions

To make sure Abilify is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had

heart disease, high or low blood pressure, heart rhythm problems;

liver or kidney disease;

low white blood cell (WBC) counts

The liquid form of this medicine may contain up to 15 grams of sugar per dose. Before using Abilify oral solution, speak to your doctor if you have diabetes.

Abilify also causes you to have high blood sugar. If you are diabetic, check your blood sugar levels regularly while you are taking this medicine.disintegrating tablet form of this medicine may contain 3 milligrams of phenylalanine per tablet. Before taking this medicine, consult your doctor if you have phenylketonuria.

How should I take Abilify?

Take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor and follow the direction of use when your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose that will get you the best results. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than prescribed.

  • Do not take Abilify for longer than six weeks unless your doctor has told you to.
  • Take this medicine with or without food
  • Swallow the regular tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.

To take the orally disintegrating tablet

  • Keep the Abilify in its blister pack until you are ready to use it. Open the package and peel back the foil. Do not push a tablet through the foil, or you may crush the tablet.
  • Use dry hands to open the tablet and place it in your mouth
  • Do not swallow the tablet whole. Allow it to dissolve in your mouth without crushing. If desired, you may drink liquid to help take the dissolved tablet.
What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed or skipped a dose as soon as you remember. Skip or avoid the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take an extra dose to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdose signs may include vomiting, drowsiness, aggression, confusion, tremors, fast or slow heart rate, seizure, trouble breathing, or fainting.

What should I avoid while taking Abilify?

The medicine may weaken your reactions or thinking. Be careful or alert if you drive or do anything. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting, or you may feel dizzy or lying position. Avoid drinking alcohol. Dangerous side effects could occur. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated. Drink plenty of water, particularly in hot weather and during exercise. It is easier to become seriously overheated and dehydrated while you are taking Abilify.

Abilify side effects

Seek emergency medical help if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction to Abilify: difficulty breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • severe agitation, distress, or restless feeling;
  • twitching
  • the mask-like appearance of the face, trouble swallowing, problems with speech
  • seizure (convulsions)
  • thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself
  • severe nervous system reaction--very stiff muscles, high fever, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, tremors, feeling like you might pass out.

Common Abilify side effects may include:

  • severe agitation, distress, or restless feeling;
  • twitching
  • the mask-like appearance of the face, trouble swallowing, problems with speech
  • seizure (convulsions)
  • thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself
  • Severe nervous system reaction--very stiff muscles, high fever, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, tremors, feeling like you might pass out
  • Weight gain
  • blurred vision
  • nausea, vomiting, changes in appetite, constipation
  • drooling
  • sleep problems (insomnia); or
  • cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat
